In first presentation, I learned about what digital preservation entails. As we move into electronic era of digital object, it is important that the library as an organization in the information business, should follow suit and embrace this tool to improve its service. There are new services that are being introduced in the library sector and one of them is digital repository, OPEN Source and electronic books. In the second presentation, I learned about how to create and compile an e-information strategy and also how to get all staff members in the organization involved in whole strategy. In the presentation about customer service, I have learned all the skills on how to make sure that all our customers are treated with respect and in all our planning strategy, the customer should receive high attention. As a customer driven organization, the value that a customer must receive, should be of high quality. In the presentation about competitive intelligence, I learned about What is competitive intelligence? How does competitive intelligence fit into the strategic planning process? What is the role of knowledge management and how does it relate to competitive intelligence? Is competitor analysis identical to competitive intelligence? How can competitive intelligence become part of a corporate intranet strategy? How do we train our employees to beware of corporate espionage and protect our intellectual property? Do the companies we compete with engage in competitive intelligence on us and what is the effectiveness of their competitive intelligence process? How do we measure the effectiveness of our own CI process?

Day 8
19th March 2010 (Friday)
In the first session the presenter gave a lecture on knowledge management and why should libraries be concerned about it. In the second session we were shown the practical application of how knowledge management is implemented in organizations.
What have I learned for the day
I have learned that knowledge management is an important step any institution like the library has to conduct. The library as the custodian of information resources, has to conduct knowledge management as a priority. I also learned about the value of trust in knowledge management and the importance of trust in any operation of the organization. I have also learned that knowledge management, according to (Corrall, 1998) it involves connecting people with people as well as people with information. It is a management philosophy which combines good practice in purposeful information management with a culture of organizational learning, in order to improve business practice.
What have I intend doing at my work place
Firstly as knowledge management is still a new term in the market, I will have to inform my staff about what knowledge management is and how we can apply it to coordinate our information resources and manage it better.

Day 7
18th March 2010 (Thursday)
Today’s session we were given a lecture on ethics in on organizational setting, what is ethics all about and how to implement it in an organizational and personal level
What have I learned in the programme
During this session, I have learned that ethics is in a business environment refers to the ethical values that determine the interaction between a company and its stakeholders. This clearly indicates that how we communicate, interact and how we conduct our business in the library counts a lot as this gives a clear picture of if an organization does not treat its clients with respect and with trust, they portray a negative image and this can hamper its survival as there wont be any client who wants to engage with such an organization.
What have I intend doing at my work place
Inform and train staff members on good ethical behaviour in providing service to our clients

Day 6
17th March 2010 (Wednesday)
Today’s session started at 8:30 and the presenter engaged all the participants identify what they have learned so far and how they are going to implement what they have learned in terms of their leadership styles. Also participants were requested to identify what they intent to change in their working environment. During this session, we discussed the Performance Management System and how important it in an organization, all legislation that deals with employment rules and we even discussed how to deal with conflict in the organization and also training and skills development. Organizational culture was one of one topic which was discussed in detail as it may create or destroy an organization if it is not handled properly.
What have I learned for the day
During this session, I have learned about the different leadership style and how all the four of them might influence how a leader leads. The four leadership styles are as follows:
· Autocratic – the leader takes decisions and announces them, expecting subordinates to carry them out without question
· Persuasive – the leader takes all the decisions for the group without discussion or consultation but believes that people will be better motivated if they are persuaded that the decisions are good ones
· Consultative – the confers with the group members before taking any decision and in fact considers their advice and their feelings when framing decisions
· Democratic – the leader always lay the problem before his/her subordinates and invite discussion. The leader’s role is that of a chair, rather than of decision taker
It is clearly evident that practically in our working environments, a leader will by required to apply all this styles as some situations will dictate how one reacts and apply his/her leadership styles. I also learned that as a leader, if one needs to have an organization that is succeeding in everything they do, the organization need a measuring tool to measure the performance of its staff and be able to develop them where they are in short supply of skills. Performance management is the setting and measurement of all desired outcomes, behaviours and activities of an organization, its individual components units and its staff members that contribute to the achievement of the strategic vision of the organization. This tool if applied correctly, it can help the organization develop its staff to be excellent in their work as this system can also identify all the areas in which an employee is lacking and identify the training needs to improve his/her performance. Performance management involves:->
· The definition of the performance that is being managed (design),
· The process of performance management (implementation)
· The management of the consequences of the performance (integration
If this tool can be applied and managed effectively, it will make the life of the manager or leader simple as there will be a tool to be used to manage performance and not the manager managing people. In connection with Conflict Management, I have learned that as a manager or leader, you need to identify the sources of conflict in your organization and deal with them before they escalate into serious conflict among staff members. Also I have learned how to deal with racial conflict in an organization as this is a serious problem in our country we tend to avoid this problems and always pass the buck and not take a stand and talk about this issue so that we could harmonize the different races in the organization. In an organization, sources of conflict may be:->
· Scarcity
· Identity
· Structural imbalances
· Differing goals
· Coordination
· Ambiguity
· Information
· Interpersonal
As a leader you to have the skill to identify these sources of conflict before they emanate into a serious problems as you will be face with a conflict situation that needs attention this takes valuable time that could be utilized to provide service somewhere. In solving conflict, there are mechanism that could be followed to solve the problem. Some of the mechanism are:->
· Joint problem identification
· Joint problem solving
· Mediation
· Arbitration
I also learned about useful steps in solving conflict and the steps learned, will help me in my organization to be able solve problems efficiently and professionally.
What have I intend doing at my work place
To refine my management style and also apply the Performance Management System correctly in my workplace and also develop my staff to enhance their knowledge so that I could surround myself with knowledgeable staff who are winners

Day 5
16th March 2010 (Tuesday)
Today’s lecture was about Organizational Leadership. We had to break according to our different groups and we had to define the different characteristics of a leader, what is leadership in the library environment, the roles of a leader and the qualities of a leader. This situation gave everybody a change to raise all the problems they experience when it comes to leadership in their organizations.
What have I learned for the day
During this session, I have learned the important role leadership plays in the organization. As a leader, according to Manfred Kets De Vries, as a leader you need to pay attention to the internal and social dynamics, to the complex playing fields between leaders and followers, and to unconscious and invisible psychodynamics processes and structures that influence the behaviour of individuals and groups in organization. As a leader, you don’t need to surround yourself with followers around you, but you need to develop peoplde around you so that you can build leaders and this bring great value to their organizations so they lighten the leadership burden and enlarge the vision and goals. I have also learned about the good qualities of the leaders and they are:->
· The ability to create a vision and excite people to achieve impossible
· Great leaders have external energy and inner strength that see them through difficult situation
· Leaders have a mental agility that enables them to make effective tough decisions
· They allow their team members to grow and carry out work without interruption
· They trust and have confidence in the ability of the team members to execute objectives successful
· Leaders have the ability to tap into people’s soles by connecting deeply with people and understanding their needs and passion to succeed
I have learned about the roles a successful leader engages in, and they are:->
· Craft and articulate a vision
· Lead by principle rather that policy
· Coach team members effectively
· Communicate business information successfully
· Eliminate barriers to the team’s effective execution
· Actively facilitate and develop team members
· Focus on the clients
In terms of behavioural aspects of a leader, I have learned about the seven habits of effective peoples:->
· Habit 1 - Be proactive (principle of personal choice)
· Habit 2 – Begin with the End in mind (principle of personal vision)
· Habit 3 – Put first thing first (principle of integrity & execution)
· Habit 4 – Think win / win (principle of mutual benefit)
· Habit 5 – Seek first to understand, then to understood (principle of mutual understanding)
· Habit 6 – Synergize (principle of creative cooperation)
· Habit 7 – Sharpen the saw (principle of balanced self renewal)
What have I intend changing at my workplace
With the knowledge I have learned for the day, I have done an introspection of how I am performing as leader and I have identified that I need to improve many things in my personal and professional setting. Firstly, I need to improve on my communication skills, mainly the listening part and not talk a lot, be proactive in everything I do, be organized and do first things first.

Day 4
15th March 2010 (Monday)
In today’s session, presenter was Mr J Tsebe (NLSA). He spoke about all the progress that is taking place in the Library & Information Sector and also the role of the National Library in this scenario. After John Tsebe’s presentation, Rachel More took the stage and she talked about the role of LIASA in the library and information sector and the successes that the organization has achieved under her chairmanship. She also explained that LIASA has send a motion to parliament so that LIASA should be recognized as a statutory body so that all the staff who are working in the library sector should be encouraged to register with and in future one of the criteria’s to be appointed in the library & information sector, LIASA membership will be a requirement. After tea-break, Prof Achie Dick gave us wonderful lecture on the role of the librarians and the library in terms of social responsibility. This has clearly opened my eyes in the way libraries are not given proper respect by the communities they served as recently during the unrest in relation to service delivery, libraries become victims as some of them were burned down. As libraries are part of us as librarians, this clearly shows lack of knowledge from our communities to see libraries as their friends and strong tool they can use to get knowledge from. After the lecture by Prof Dick, Prof Theo Bothma gave a presentation on the next generation librarians. We were given tasks to complete in our groups to look at how libraries currently look, how we would like us to look, how do we think we will look in future.
What have I learned for the day
During this session, I have learned the National Council of Library and Information Services and its role in providing guidelines to the sector, different legislations and the transformation charter. The presentation provided by Prof Dick, I learned that as librarians, we need to be vocal in protecting the library sector and this can only happen if we took our social responsibility task and provide our communities with skills to empower them about the role and function of libraries in communities and how important is a library in the community as this is a tool they can use to equip themselves with knowledge they can acquire by using the library to read and conduct research. Prof Bothma’s presentation gave us knowledge that as librarians, we need to conduct an introspection of our profession and always be proactive about events that are taking place in the information sector. We don’t need to be intimidated by technology and our user’s needs but we need to be proactive and always be a step ahead and always operate in the future. With Pamoja, what I learned is that this is an experiential activity that reaches across the borders of language, culture and class to connect individuals, and in the case of this institute, to connect librarians from different sectors (Public & Academic)

Day 3
14th March 2010 (Sunday)
Today’s session started with enthusiasm and it was wonderful. Ann De Boer was presenter and she gave us lot of training on the right type of leadership style and organization. We were shown the results of the survey that we had to complete using HBDI tool and this results clearly indicates to one what kind of leader he/she is and areas in which one needs improving
What have I learned for the day
During this session, I have learned how to be a good leader and how to behave in my work environment. During the second lesson on Campbell Leadership tool, we learned how to use this tool to conduct self inspection and learn of our weak points and strong points and thereafter create personal plan on how to improve yourself as a better leader personally and professionally.
What I intend doing with this new acquired knowledge
The knowledge acquired for the day will allow me to be in a position to enhance the relationship with my colleagues and subordinates and understand people better and also allow me to improve my leadership style. As one of my KPA is to conduct community engagement, as I have identified one of the problems which leads most of the schools in Mamelodi to perform badly and this is a result lack of leadership and direction from education authorities (GDE), I will make one of my mission to enhance the skills of school principals in Mamelodi by providing workshops for them to equip them with skills.

Expectations, Day 1 & Day 2
Expectation of the course
· To learn more about a leadership
· To learn about new technologies in the IT sector that effects the library
· To network with other colleagues from other sectors in the LIS environment
· To learn as much as I can about all the legislation that affects libraries
· To learn about traits that make one a better manager and leader
As I am new in the position as a manager of a unit, my expectation with the course is to be equipped with knowledge and skills that will allow me to be able to manage and lead my unit in a professionalism manner. I will also be able to network with colleagues in the same positions as me and learn from them how they succeed in leading and managing the staff. With little knowledge that I have, I hope to gain a lot of experience and skills in the leadership and management sector and be able to know myself better so that I will be able to accept my weak points and work on them and be in a position to manage and lead my unit better. I also would like to learn about all the new technologies that are available that could be used to enhance my skills as a librarian (WEB 2.0) and all the legislation that affects our service.
12th March 2010 (Friday)
Today was all about introduction and welcoming all the participants in the workshop. As participants, we had to introduce ourselves by giving a presentation that we compiled.
13th March 2010 (Saturday)
We started at 8:00 so that all our computers can be mapped and connected on the network as we will be using them to access the Internet for today’s lessons. After Ujala Satgoor welcomed everybody for the day, Johan Van Wyk started with his presentation on Introducing WEB 2.0 technologies and he gave a thorough explanation on the usage of the this tools to conduct our jobs with ease.
After Johan Van Wyk had completed his presentation, Antoinette Lourens introduced the BLOGS and WIKIS and she gave a practical lesson about this. We had to practice using this tools but as it was for the first time for some of us, it was a little confusing as we need to practice and use them frequently so that we could be able to use them with ease. We had to break for lunch and after lunch, Prof Theo Bothma introduced all the three assignments that had to be done during and after the workshop.
After tea-break, Hilda Kriel gave a presentation on the Campbell Leadership Descriptor tools. She showed us how to evaluate our leadership skills and styles and also how to use this tools to take a good look at how one leads and manage his/her staff. We adjourned for the day’s lessons at 17:35 and we went back to our rooms and refresh ourselves before we go to dinner. What have I learned for the day
During this session, I have learned the wonderful that are in WEB 20 and what it means. I have also learned how to use BLOGS and WIKIS and these are the tools which I feel will contribute a lot in my work. I have also learned about the Campbell leadership descriptor and how a rate myself in terms of my leadership skills and style.
After dinner, we had to reconvene with all the participants in our group (3) to discuss our assignment.
